Italy, Gioia Tauro – Deepening of the harbour channel and structural interventions E-mail

Reggio Calabria - Gioia Tauro
Deepening and strengthening of the sea bottom of the harbour channel and of the expansion basin, structural interventions and construction of the third runway of the Eastern docks of the harbour of Gioia Tauro (RC).

The works include the deepening and strengthening of the sea bottom of the harbour channel and the expansion basin together with a number of structural interventions and the construction of the third runway along the “A”, “B” e “C” sections of the eastern docks of the harbour of Gioia Tauro. These docks are 1895 m long and are divided as follows:
• section A, 783 m long and sea bottom -15 m deep;
• section B, 457 m long and sea bottom -13,5 m deep;
• section C, 645 m long and sea bottom -13,5 m deep.
The deepening of the sea bottom will be carried out in the first section of the harbour channel for about 400m up to the depth of -18,00 m , near the high sea bottom dock and in the remaining section including the North basin up to the depth of -17,00 m. The excavation near the dock areas on the East side will be performed only near the A, B and C sections ant it will stopped at the depth of -16,00 m from the sea level on a bend that is 60 m. wide. The dredged materials will be shipped in the using sites where will be used for the beach nourishment of the coast.
The scheduled activities are the following ones:
1) cement columnar treatment with jet-grouting of the sea bottom near the bulkhead on the sections A, B and C, starting from the depth –16m, to strengthen the dock basement and get ready for the following dredging and the application of the project loading.
2) Covering of the bulkhead’s sea facing from the depth of -16,0m up to –10m, with a concrete protection wall and filling of empty spaces on the bulkhead’s joints.
3) Preparation of a new reinforced concrete rail-holder beam with an axe 30,48 m from the dock’s rail and laid on reinforced concrete plates up to the depth of –18 m, transversally arranged to the rail-holder plate
4) Preparation of the connection reinforced concrete slab under the surface of the dock’s yard laid on a lean concrete layer, stretching from the bulkhead to the new rail-holder beam working as a connection tie rod among the different pilings and the bulkhead.
